Halland runs along Sweden's west coast between Gothenburg and Skåne — a narrow county where long, shallow, west-facing beaches meet some of the country's best farmland, and where four rivers (Lagan, Nissan, Ätran and Viskan, the four waves on the coat of arms) carry wild Atlantic salmon down from the inland forests.
Danish until 1645, it keeps a border-country history: Varberg's medieval fortress, the bog-preserved Bocksten Man, and the UNESCO-listed Grimeton Radio Station. Today it's Sweden's summer coast — surf at Apelviken, family sand at Tylösand and Mellbystrand, and cold-bath culture that keeps people swimming all winter.
