Nature in Halland

Behind the beaches, Halland is beech forest, heather heath, bird wetlands and four salmon rivers running west off the Småland highlands.

Halland's nature splits into three bands: the coast (dunes, rocky reserves, wetlands), the agricultural plain, and the forested inland ridge country. All of it is small-scale and close — nowhere in the county is more than an hour from anywhere else.

Getterön outside Varberg is one of northern Europe's best bird wetlands. The Åkulla area holds Sweden's finest beech forests. And the rivers — Lagan, Nissan, Ätran, Viskan — give the county its four-river coat of arms.
