Running
Hard sand at low tide, waymarked coastal paths and forest loops inland — Halland's flat geography makes it an easy county to run in.
Running in Halland splits naturally into three kinds of route: the beach, the coastal path, and the inland forest loop. All three are flat by Swedish standards, all three are free and unpatrolled, and between them they cover most of what a visiting runner — training through a holiday or chasing a change of scenery — is likely to want.
Where to do it in Halland
The signature route is Prins Bertils stig, an eighteen-kilometre waymarked path running from Halmstad Castle out along the coast past Tylösand toward Möllegård and Ringenäs — long enough to run in sections or as a genuine long run for a fit visitor, and popular enough with locals that you'll rarely have it entirely to yourself on a summer evening. Beach running works best at low water, when the outgoing tide leaves a band of firm, flat sand along beaches like Tylösand, Mellbystrand and Skrea strand that's kinder on the legs than dry loose sand higher up — check the tide state rather than assuming, since Halland's tidal range is modest but enough to matter for footing.
Inland, the forest around Skedala near Halmstad and the Åkulla beech forests near Varberg both have networks of marked trails that suit a looped training run rather than a point-to-point — shaded, softer underfoot than road, and a good option on a hot day when the beach offers no shelter at all. Town running is easy too: Halmstad's riverside paths along the Nissan and Varberg's seafront both give a flat, well-lit option for an easy recovery run without leaving the centre.
Season and conditions
Running works year-round here. Summer brings long light and warm evenings but also crowded beach paths and heat with little shade on the coast — Skedala and Åkulla's tree cover are the better choice on a hot afternoon. Spring and autumn are arguably the best running weather Halland gets: cool, generally dry, and quiet on the trails. Winter is mild by Swedish standards for a coastal county but does bring wind, rain and the occasional frost or light snow inland — road shoes with reasonable grip cover most winter conditions, and forest trails can turn soft and rutted after a wet spell.
Gear, rentals and schools
This is a bring-your-own-shoes activity — there's no running-gear rental scene, though Halmstad and Varberg both have sports shops for anything forgotten or damaged en route. No permit is needed for any of the beach, coastal or forest routes described here, all of which fall under the general right of public access. Runners looking for organised training or a race to target should check the county's calendar of sports events, which lists the recurring road races and trail runs that come through Halmstad, Varberg and Falkenberg through the year.
Skill level and safety
Nothing here demands technical trail-running skill — the terrain is gentle, the paths are well used, and route-finding on Prins Bertils stig is straightforward thanks to consistent waymarking. The main practical risks are ordinary ones: check the tide before committing to a long beach run so you're not caught by rising water on a falling-tide route, wear visible clothing and a light on unlit coastal paths after dark in winter, and carry water on inland forest loops, where there are no taps or kiosks once you're off the main road. Loose dogs on shared beach paths are common in the off season, since dog-exercise rules ease outside the summer bathing months.
Plan it
Base in Halmstad to run Prins Bertils stig and the Tylösand beach sections from the same hotel, or in Varberg for Åkulla and a cold dip to finish. The outdoor weekend itinerary has the flexibility to swap in a long coastal or forest run in place of one of its other activities.
