Gekås Ullared is a single, enormous department store built up over decades in a village that would otherwise have no reason to appear on a map of Halland. It sells everything from clothing and homeware to groceries and electronics under one roof, at a scale that has made it a destination in its own right rather than a place people pass through — Swedish families plan entire trips, and even short holidays, around a visit here, and the long-running television series named after it has only cemented the store's status as a piece of popular culture as much as a retail outlet.

There's exactly one place to do this: the store itself, in Ullared, inland from the coast between Falkenberg and Varberg. The building is vast, laid out in sprawling departments that reward a plan rather than an aimless wander — first-time visitors consistently underestimate how large it is and how long a proper visit takes. The village around the store has grown to support the traffic it generates: places to eat, park and stay cluster around what is, for a settlement this size, an outsized piece of retail infrastructure.

Ullared draws a crowd year-round, but the pattern is predictable: weekends and school holidays are the busiest, and the run-up to Christmas is the single most intense period of the year, alongside seasonal sales windows. Weekday mornings, outside school-holiday periods, are consistently the calmer choice if avoiding a queue and a packed car park matters more to you than anything else.
