Östra stranden

Östra stranden ("the eastern strand") is what Halmstad residents mean when they say they're going to the beach without qualifying it further — it starts more or less where the town's southern edge does and runs south along Laholmsbukten, close enough to walk or cycle to from most of the city. Where Tylösand trades on distance and dune wilderness, Östra stranden trades on convenience: it's the beach you get to on a whim after work, not the one you plan a day trip around.

That closeness shapes the character of the place. There's a paved promenade running along the top of the beach rather than a dune line, beach volleyball courts and a skatepark near the northern end, and a steady flow of joggers, dog walkers and families rather than the resort crowd further west at Tylösand. It reads less as a destination beach and more as a piece of Halmstad's everyday geography — which is exactly its appeal.

The sand and the swimming

The shelving here is about as gentle as it gets on this coast, which is the main reason it's the beach most Halmstad families default to with small children. The bottom stays shallow for a long way out, the sand is fine, and because the beach curves gently rather than facing the open sea head-on, it's marginally more sheltered from the worst of the onshore westerlies than Tylösand a few kilometres north. That said, exposure is still real — a stiff wind off the Kattegatt raises a chop here too, and there's no dune line to hide behind, just the odd windbreak people bring themselves or a spot near the promenade wall.

Late-summer jellyfish blooms reach this stretch as they do the rest of the coast; they're generally harmless moon jellies but worth watching for with young waders. Water quality is monitored through the season — check current status via the national Badplatsen service before you go, since conditions after heavy rain can shift quickly this close to the Nissan's outflow into the bay.

Facilities

Being a town beach rather than a resort one, Östra stranden runs on Halmstad's ordinary infrastructure: public toilets, showers, and a scatter of kiosks and cafés along the promenade that open for the season and thin out considerably once September arrives. There's no lifeguard cover here in the way there is at the busiest stretch of Tylösand — this is a beach where you look after your own, as at most of Halland's beaches outside the single most crowded spots.

What it does have that quieter beaches don't is genuine urban amenity: benches, lighting along the promenade for evening walks, sports courts, and easy access to the town's cafés and restaurants just a few streets back if the kiosks are shut.

Getting there and parking

This is the easiest beach in the guide to reach without a car. It's within comfortable walking or cycling distance of central Halmstad, on the town's own cycle network, and served by local buses. Street parking and a handful of car parks line the promenade, and while they do fill on the hottest days, the turnover is quicker than at Tylösand simply because so many visitors arrive on foot or by bike instead. There's no dune walk from car to sand — you're on the beach within moments of parking.
