Skummeslövsstrand

Skummeslövsstrand is the southern continuation of the same beach system as Mellbystrand, together forming close to twelve kilometres of unbroken sand on Laholmsbukten — but the resemblance ends at the sand itself. Where Mellbystrand has a village and a mini-golf course, Skummeslövsstrand backs onto pine plantations and low dunes with far less development pressing right up against the beach. It's the version of this strand that people choose specifically to avoid the crowds a few kilometres north.

The pace here matches the setting: summer houses tucked into the trees rather than a dense holiday-town centre, a scatter of camping grounds, and a beach that on an ordinary weekday can feel close to empty even in July. It's a five to ten-minute drive from Laholm's medieval centre, which makes it an easy pairing with a look at the town itself.

The sand and the swimming

The shelving is as gentle as its northern neighbour's — this whole strand shares the same shallow profile that makes the Laholm bay warm up quickly and stay forgiving for children. The exposure is the same too: fully west-facing with no headland to break an onshore wind, so a stiff sea breeze raises a chop and can move sand around fast on the open beach. The low dunes and pine treeline behind the beach offer a reasonable wind shelter if you're prepared to walk back a little from the shoreline rather than camp right at the water's edge.

Jellyfish season runs the same course here as elsewhere on the coast — more common from late summer onward, mostly the harmless moon jelly rather than anything painful. As always, check the national Badplatsen service for current bathing-water status rather than assuming it hasn't changed since your last visit.

Facilities

Facilities are thinner and more scattered than at Mellbystrand, which is part of the appeal for anyone trying to escape it. A handful of kiosks and beach cafés near the main access points open for the summer season and close down once it ends; toilets exist at the principal car parks but not along the whole length of beach. Don't expect lifeguard cover here — that's concentrated at a small number of the busiest beaches in the county, and this isn't one of them.

What the pine woods behind the dunes do offer is genuine shelter for a picnic or a windbreak day out, something the fully open beach further north lacks.

Getting there and parking

Skummeslövsstrand is a short drive from Laholm, reached via minor roads through the pine plantations rather than a single main approach road. Parking is spread across several smaller car parks rather than one large one, which tends to keep pressure down even in peak season — you may need to walk a little further from car to sand here than at the more developed beaches, but it's rarely a serious trek. A car is the practical way to reach it; public transport options are thinner than into Mellbystrand or Halmstad.
