Skummeslövsstrand

Skummeslövsstrand continues the beach south from Mellbystrand along Laholmsbukten almost to the Skåne border, and it's the calmer of the two villages that share the strand. There's less of a commercial front here — fewer kiosks, fewer signs — and more of a residential, cottage-lined feel, though the summer population still dwarfs the year-round one. Like its neighbour, it belongs to Laholm municipality rather than being a town in its own right; the reason to come is the sand, with a genuine, small medieval church as the one piece of real sightseeing.

Why go

Choose Skummeslövsstrand over Mellbystrand if you want the same beach with fewer people and less resort infrastructure around it — it suits couples and families who are happy to self-cater and don't need a strip of shops on the doorstep. It doesn't suit anyone looking for nightlife, a town centre, or much beyond the beach and the coastal path; for that, Laholm or Halmstad are the better bases.

Things to see and do

Skummeslövs kyrka, a small fieldstone church with medieval origins, sits a short walk inland from the beach and is the one genuine historic sight in the village — one of several medieval churches scattered across Halland from the centuries of Danish rule. Beyond that, the village runs on the beach itself: walking or cycling north into Mellbystrand, or simply spending the day on the sand covered in the Skummeslövsstrand beach guide. The Kattegattleden cycle route runs along this coast too, making a half-day loop north to Mellbystrand and back an easy way to see more of the bay.

Beaches and nature nearby

The beach itself is the southern end of the roughly twelve-kilometre strand shared with Mellbystrand — same fine, pale sand, same shallow, gently shelving shoreline, with slightly fewer footprints on it most days. Behind the beach, low dunes run the length of the coast; the Lagan river reaches the sea a short way north, near Laholm, and is the main draw for anglers working this part of the county. There's no formal nature reserve at Skummeslövsstrand itself, but the open dune and heath landscape either side of the village is worth a slow walk if you're not in a hurry to get back to the water.

Eat and drink

Options are thin and strongly seasonal: a café or two near the main beach access, ice cream in summer, otherwise self-catering from what you bring or pick up in Laholm. It's not a place to plan a restaurant evening around — for that, drive into Laholm or further to Halmstad, both of which have a proper spread of restaurants and cafés.

Getting there

Laholm station, on the Västkustbanan main line with regular SJ and Öresundståg trains, is the nearest railhead; from there it's a bus or short taxi ride to the coast. By car, the village sits just off the E6 south of Laholm. Cyclists can reach it directly via the Kattegattleden route from either Mellbystrand or the Skåne side.
