Tylösand

Tylösand is a village that exists because of its beach. It sits a short drive or bus ride west of Halmstad, and its identity is entirely built around the roughly 7 km run of pale sand that faces the Kattegatt — wide, gently shelving, backed by dunes and pine, and warm enough by Swedish standards to draw crowds through the whole summer. Hotel Tylösand, right on the sand, anchors the village's beach-club scene, and the mix of hotel guests, second-home owners and day-trippers from Halmstad gives Tylösand a livelier, more resort-like feel in July than almost anywhere else in Halland.

Outside peak summer, Tylösand is much quieter, and the same beach and the coastal path running through it make for a good off-season walk without any of the crowds.

If you want the single most famous stretch of sand in Halland, this is it — long, wide, easy to reach, and set up with enough beach-club infrastructure that a full day here doesn't require planning much beyond arriving. It's also close enough to Halmstad's castle, museums and restaurants that you can split a day between beach and town without a long drive, which not every Halland beach village offers.

The beach itself is the main event, but Tylösand has a few things beyond the sand. It's home to one of Sweden's best-known golf courses, which has hosted top professional tournaments over the years and draws golfers as much as beachgoers in shoulder season. Prins Bertils stig, the 18 km waymarked coastal path from central Halmstad, runs directly through Tylösand on its way toward Ringenäs and Möllegård, making it easy to walk a section without a car. For a break from the sand, the pine woods immediately behind the dunes offer shaded paths that stay cool even on the hottest days.

Tylösand beach is the reason to come, and it's long enough that you can generally find a quieter stretch even in high season by walking away from the hotel end. South toward Halmstad, Östra stranden is the town's own shallow beach. North, the coastal path continues toward Ringenäs, a duned stretch with fewer facilities and far fewer people, and on toward Haverdal, which has its own beach and a nature reserve behind the dunes. All of these sit within a short bike ride of each other along the same stretch of coast.

Tylösand's dining is concentrated around Hotel Tylösand and the beachfront, with a summer-driven scene of beach bars and restaurants that scales up sharply for the season and quiets down considerably outside it. For a wider choice, and prices that aren't pegged to a beach-club location, Halmstad's restaurants are a short drive or bus ride away. A handful of kiosks and ice-cream stands along the beach cover the basics for a day on the sand without needing to leave it.

Tylösand has no train station of its own — the nearest is Halmstad Central, from which regular Hallandstrafiken buses run out to the beach, more frequently in summer. By car it's a straightforward ten-minute drive from central Halmstad, though parking near the beach fills up fast on hot weekends, so arriving early or cycling is the more reliable option in July and August. Gothenburg Landvetter and Copenhagen Kastrup are the nearest major airports, both reached via Halmstad.
